Webb12 juli 2005 · 822 Posts. #2 · Jul 9, 2005. I used a Crane Retro-Fit roller cam in a 84 351W for a few years with no problems at all. Made 425 hp and reved to the moon with no problems. Real sound engine, didn't really open the hood for a few months and when i did it was just to check oil. I don't think there is anything wrong with a small base circle cam.
Webb8 maj 2010 · Yes, typically, the only clearance issues on a 5.7" rod 400 will be the heads of the rod bolts to the cam. A small base circle cam will provide extra clearance, or grinding the bolts slightly sometimes works. There are also rods out there made to provide the proper clearance.
